Lakota Indians Block ‘Keystone XL Pipeline’ Trucks in Six-Hour Standoff

According to the Rapid City (SD) Journal “several dozens” of American Indians were part of the blockade but a community journalist reports only five people were arrested.

An action alert made it’s way throughout the reservation on Monday called on men to help block the trucks. KILI, a Pine Ridge Rez radio station posted the alert.

Despite the Obama administration’s recent decision denying an environmental permit for the pipeline, which would carry oil from the Alberta tar sands to Texas refineries, TransCanada is pressing forward with its plans to apply for another permit. The company announced in an earnings report on Tuesday (Jan 14) that it expected the pipeline to start operating in 2015.
