Driver charged after video shows near-fatal crash on WA highway

By Alex Condon

A driver has been charged after footage released online captured a breathtaking near miss between a road train and a car on a highway east of Perth.

The jaw-dropping footage, posted by Dash Cam Owners Australia, shows a large A-double road-train truck driving along the Great Eastern Highway about 12:20am on Saturday as it approaches a bend.

As the centre white line turns solid (signalling a bend in the road and upcoming T-intersection), the headlights of a car are seen approaching from the opposite direction.

The dramatic video then shows the truck swerving quickly back into the lane, missing the oncoming car by centimetres, but the sudden lane change upsets the balance of the second trailer and it rolls.

The camera truck filming the horror show then slows enough to avoid a second collision.

As the road train tries to straighten up, the rear trailer tips over as it drives along.

Police charged the 27-year-old road train operator with one count of dangerous driving and is due to appear in court at a later date.
